the 13th amendment to the us constitution abolished slavery, but it also included a provision that many people don't know about, and that's what this documentary brings to the fore. "neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the united states." this exception justifies the use of forced labor as long as the worker is a convict. 13th documentary makes the case that including this loophole is only one of the justifications for continuing the domination of people of color.
